Frequently Asked Questions About KIOXIA SSDs

Here we answer the most common questions about KIOXIA SSDs: which series fits your platform, how CD9P, CM9, XD8 and PM7 differ, which form factors and capacities (including 30 TB) are available and what to consider with EOL series such as CM7 and CD8P. We also explain SIE and SED and show where you can buy KIOXIA SSDs in Germany.

It depends on interface, form factor, capacity and endurance. The CD9P series (PCIe Gen5, Single Port) is designed for scale-out storage and cloud and hyperscale platforms, the CM9 series (PCIe Gen5, optional Dual Port) for enterprise storage, tier-0 systems and databases. The XD8 series serves dense E1.S servers, the PM7 series SAS-based enterprise systems. We are happy to help you choose the right version and part number.

Both series use PCIe Gen5 and NVMe 2.0. The CD9P is a single-port SSD in E3.S and U.2 for scalable cloud and data center workloads. The CM9 offers optional dual-port operation in E3.S and U.3 for highly available enterprise server and storage architectures.

R stands for read-intensive versions at 1 DWPD, V for mixed-use versions at 3 DWPD. DWPD (Drive Writes Per Day) indicates how often the entire capacity may be written per day. These variants exist for CD9P, CM9 and PM7 as well as the EOL series CD8P, CD8 and CM7.

SIE stands for Sanitize Instant Erase and enables fast, secure erasure of data by deleting the encryption key. SED stands for Self-Encrypting Drive, an SSD with hardware-based encryption of the stored data. Which version is available depends on the specific part number. Read more in our article SIE and SED Encryption in KIOXIA SSDs.

CD9P and CM9 are available in E3.S 1T (7.5 mm), the CD9P additionally as U.2 and the CM9 additionally as U.3 (each 2.5-inch, 15 mm). The XD8 uses the E1.S form factor (9.5 mm), the SAS SSD PM7 the 2.5-inch form factor (15 mm).

The read-intensive versions of the PM7 and of the CD9P and CM9 in E3.S go up to 30.72 TB, the CD9P as U.2 and the CM9 as U.3 up to 61.44 TB. Mixed-use versions go up to 12.8 TB, the XD8 up to 7.68 TB. The exact capacity steps depend on the part number. You can find a selection under KIOXIA 30 TB SSDs.

CD9P, CM9 and XD8 use PCIe Gen5 x4 with NVMe 2.0. The PM7 relies on 24G SAS with optional dual-port operation and is particularly suited to classic, SAS-based enterprise storage architectures.

CD8P and CD8 (successor: CD9P), CM7 (successor: CM9) and XD7P (successor: XD8) are marked as EOL.

The series remain relevant for existing platforms and replacement demand. We check availability, remaining stock and release of the specific part number before preparing a quotation. For new projects, we recommend considering the respective successor generation.

For older series, please contact us directly. We check whether remaining stock is still available or whether we can source the products, and advise you on suitable alternatives. Use the project enquiry for this.
