Authorised SkyHigh Memory Distributor for Embedded Flash

Memorysolution is an authorised distributor for SkyHigh Memory and the point of contact for developers, OEMs and system manufacturers who place flash memory directly on the board – as parallel SLC NAND, SPI NAND or eMMC.

SkyHigh Memory specialises in an area the large NAND manufacturers increasingly treat as peripheral: low and mid-density memory devices that must remain available unchanged for many years. That is precisely where industrial designs place their requirements.

Our approach: with memory ICs, the deciding factor is not unit price but whether the device will still be available pin-compatible in five years. We settle that question before design-in, not after.

Who Is SkyHigh Memory?

SkyHigh Memory Limited, headquartered in Hong Kong, was established on 1 April 2019 as a joint venture between SK hynix system ic and Cypress Semiconductor, with Cypress contributing its entire SLC NAND business.

For users, the history matters most: the product families originate from the Spansion portfolio and have been on the market since 2012. This is not a new supplier but an established product line under new ownership – set up expressly to secure the long-term supply of SLC NAND.

The focus lies on four markets: automotive, communications, industrial and medical technology, and consumer electronics.

What Sets Our Partner Apart

Long-Term Availability as a Product Commitment

With memory ICs, discontinuation is a greater risk than failure. A device that becomes unavailable after three years forces a redesign – with layout changes, requalification and, in regulated environments, potentially a new approval.

SkyHigh Memory addresses this with a formalised longevity programme:

SLC NAND Flash: minimum five to seven years of availability

eMMC and SLC NAND-based MCP: minimum seven years

Forward compatibility of core features when moving to newer technology nodes

Those core features include command set, package and pinout, density, voltage range and temperature range. In practice: a technology change at the manufacturer does not force a change on the board.

Further Differentiators

Internal ECC engine. The current SLC NAND generation includes its own ECC engine and therefore works with controllers and SoCs that support only 1-bit ECC. For existing designs and the replacement of older devices this is often the decisive point – modern platforms with stronger ECC are supported equally.

Two-level block protection. A volatile and a permanent protection mechanism guard memory contents against unintended or malicious overwriting. This is not standard on commodity SLC NAND.

Security features for boot code. The SecureNAND family extends protection for sensitive boot code, system firmware and application integrity – requirements that standard memory devices do not address.

Demonstrated radiation robustness. A study published in the Microelectronics Reliability Journal documents high resilience to radiation-induced soft errors from terrestrial neutrons and alpha particles for the current SLC NAND family.

Compact packages. Footprints down to roughly 48 mm² enable designs with tight space constraints.

Temperature and Qualification Classes

SkyHigh Memory distinguishes four classes. The choice depends not only on ambient temperature but also on whether automotive qualification has to be demonstrated.

ClassRange and Application
Industrial-40 °C to +85 °C – standard class for industrial applications
Industrial Plus-40 °C to +105 °C – for installations with significant self-heating
Automotive AEC-Q100 Grade 3-40 °C to +85 °C – with automotive qualification
Automotive AEC-Q100 Grade 2-40 °C to +105 °C – highest class for in-vehicle applications

Not every density and package is available in every class. The specific combination is confirmed per project.

Product Areas

The portfolio is structured by interface. This is usually predetermined by the controller or SoC and therefore the first selection criterion.

Parallel SLC NAND Flash

The core product line: SLC NAND with an x8 ONFI interface in densities from 1 Gbit to 16 Gbit, available at 1.8 V or 3 V supply voltage. Packages as BGA-63ball, FBGA-63ball or TSOP-48pin, with 1-bit and 4-bit ECC options supported.

SLC means one bit per cell – considerably higher write endurance and data retention than MLC or TLC, at lower density. For boot code, firmware and configuration data that is exactly the right trade-off.

Typical for: boot storage in control systems, networking equipment, automotive clusters and infotainment, industrial automation

SPI NAND Flash

Serial NAND with an SPI interface in densities from 1 Gbit to 4 Gbit, supplied in an LGA-8pin package measuring 6 × 8 mm. The low pin count saves traces and board space, making it the obvious choice where a parallel interface is unavailable or unnecessary.

Available up to automotive class.

Typical for: space-constrained boards, IoT nodes, gateways, sensor systems, cost-sensitive embedded designs

eMMC 5.1

Managed NAND with an integrated controller in capacities from 4 GB to 64 GB, in an FBGA-153ball package. Error correction, wear levelling and bad block management are handled by the device itself, so the host requires no NAND management of its own.

This shortens development time considerably where a file system or operating system is to be stored.

Typical for: embedded Linux systems, panel PCs, medical devices, communications infrastructure

Multi-Chip Packages

SkyHigh Memory additionally offers MCP solutions combining SLC NAND and LPDDR4X in a JEDEC-compliant 149-ball BGA. Compared with two separate devices this saves more than half the board area.

These products are not currently part of our standard range but can be requested per project.

SkyHigh Memory Limited was founded in 2019 and is headquartered in Hong Kong, established as a joint venture between SK hynix system ic and Cypress Semiconductor. The product families derive from the acquired Cypress NAND business and have been on the market since 2012.

SkyHigh Memory offers parallel SLC NAND Flash from 1 Gbit to 16 Gbit, SPI NAND from 1 Gbit to 4 Gbit and eMMC 5.1 from 4 GB to 64 GB, plus multi-chip packages combining SLC NAND and LPDDR4X.

SLC stands for single level cell – one bit per memory cell. This yields considerably higher write endurance and data retention than MLC or TLC, at lower density. Typical applications are boot code, firmware and configuration data in embedded systems.

SkyHigh Memory operates a longevity programme with a minimum of five to seven years of availability for SLC NAND and a minimum of seven years for eMMC and MCP. Core features such as command set, package, pinout, density, voltage and temperature range remain forward-compatible.

Four classes: Industrial from -40 to +85 °C, Industrial Plus from -40 to +105 °C, and automotive to AEC-Q100 Grade 3 (-40 to +85 °C) and Grade 2 (-40 to +105 °C).

Yes, part of the portfolio is qualified to AEC-Q100 Grade 2 and Grade 3. Which densities and packages are available in which class is confirmed per project.

Yes. The current SLC NAND generation features an internal ECC engine and therefore works with chipsets supporting only 1-bit ECC. Platforms with stronger ECC are equally supported.

For parallel SLC NAND: BGA-63ball, FBGA-63ball and TSOP-48pin. For SPI NAND: LGA-8pin at 6 × 8 mm. For eMMC: FBGA-153ball. Compact footprints down to roughly 48 mm² are available.

Yes. The SLC NAND families provide volatile and permanent block protection. For higher requirements around boot code and system firmware, the SecureNAND family is available in addition.

SPI NAND uses a serial interface with few pins, saving board space and traces. Parallel NAND offers higher throughput via the x8 interface. Which variant applies is usually determined by the controller.

As soon as a file system or operating system is stored. eMMC includes the controller and handles error correction, wear levelling and bad block management, so the host needs no NAND management of its own.

Yes. We assess interface, density, package, pinout, voltage and temperature range to determine whether a SkyHigh device works as a replacement or drop-in alternative.

Yes. We provide samples for design-in and qualification and support the process through to series release.
