Certified memory modules?
Where is the difference between certified and compatible?

More and more customers ask specifically for certified memory modules. But what does certified mean in this context? When would you call them compatible. The key factor is who certifies them.

Products can be certified directly from the manufacturer of the application
or by a third party, for example by a module manufacturer such as Memorysolution. Usually you would call this certification process a compatibility guarantee. The lines in the terminology are blurry in this field. A module is actually certified when the respective main board manufacturer or the manufacturer of the industrial application tests the modules and officially certifies them.

Example: Supermicro, Fujitsu, Siemens, Dell, HP, etc. test the memory modules with their application and publish their recommendations on their websites or AVLs.

In most cases, manufacturers take original memory modules from chip manufacturers such as Samsung, Hynix, Micron, or Nanya, which they also use in their builds and certify the respective part number. However, this does not mean that other part numbers of the manufacturers (e.g. newer revisions, other speeds or capacities) or even different manufacturers will not work with this application. Sometimes you also find part numbers of third party manufacturers which buy chips from the major chip manufacturers to build modules, such as Kingston. It is safe to assume that memory modules from other manufacturers will also work as long as they have the same specifications. These products are then called compatible.

Example: Memorysolution tests their modules on boards or in computers, work stations, servers, printers, or industrial applications and guarantees after thorough testing, their compatibility.

Memorysolution offers both types of modules, manufacturer certified memory modules as well as compatible modules. Our technical department tests memory modules with a wide variety of systems and main-boards on a daily basis. We offer the manufacturer certified memory modules and additionally modules with a compatibility guarantee. We not only have a price advantage with our modules but also offer compatible alternatives for certified modules in case they are not available on the market or discontinued. The revisions of the memory module manufacturers change very rapidly which makes it hard to keep up with the certification and sometimes older models are not even validated anymore.
